I agree with most of this but something I've learned and biggest regret is not adding more to my 401K when my job was matching. Krista mentions free money with points on credit cards. The same goes for 401K. If you are getting free money from your current job you need to maximize that as much as you can. It's FREE MONEY. Especially because there is no guarantee you'll be in this job for a long time. Anytime you can get laid off or you decide to quit and you didn't get that FREE money while you were working there. I know at a young age it seems like retirement is so far away but trust me when you start working time flys by and you have so many changes in your career that the money you are setting aside for your future self matters more and more every year. I regret not adding more money when I could. I am 40k short every year till I get to my retirement age. All because I didn't add more sooner. Also, you have to think that the way things are constantly fluctuating you don't know what your money situation will be. All the people that thought they'd get a certain amount of money when they retired in 2020 and afterward got THOUSANDS less because the stock market went down due to the pandemic. My professor in finance always said if you put more money to savings or what you are spending daily, weekly, monthly and little to your future self means you don't know how to budget your money. Anyone who earns an income can set aside money for retirement, savings and the present. Also, if you want more money because what you earn now doesn't get what you want it's really then assessing of acquiring more skills to earn more or get a second job. Also, getting a ROTH IRA is so beneficial as well. Look into that. As for PPO vs HMO. PPO lets you visit any doctor or specialist outside of your insurance network. HMO only allows you to see doctors and specialists in their health network. Also, you need to consider how often you need to see a doctor. Some people have special needs or specific medicine so they want PPO for the flexibility and those that only see a doctor for annual check up and/or contraceptives really get the lowest in HMO because they are not needing to see a specific specialist.

I agree with most of this BUT one thing I'd highlight to anyone reading this including Krista you SHOULD be adding more to 401k as much as you can. Savings you should have some goals to cover expenses should you ever lose your job etc but if a corporate company is offering FREE money you take it. It's naive to think that you will have this job for a long time and you can increase at another time and also naive to think that every job offers that. It's just not true. Some jobs don't even offer any 401k plans. So, although it may seem you have YEARS ahead of you before you're retirement that's all it is SEEMS you have but when your hustling and living life those years come so much faster and the more you can get in now, maximize and reap the benefits of stock increasing now the better future outcome you have. Think about folks that thought they'd be good in 2020 to retirement only to realize the value of their stock went down that they actually ended up having less money for retirement then they had predicted anyone really. If free points is a priority using credit cards then so should it be your retirement. That is really what your net worth is. Not how much you have presently but overall if anything should happen how much do you really have or how much do you really want? I highly recommend for everyone to contribute as much as you to your 401k EVEN if your company doesn't match. I say this because I too was doing 3% for the longest and 11 years later I regret it because stock market has fluctuated so much and I am about 40K short annually to the total amount I'd want and need to live off my retirement. Mind you when you retire you're older and everything is pricier (med's, homes, places to live, etc). Don't worry ONLY about the present think about the future. Also, look into Roth IRA's those have even more benefits. The way I see it if you are giving little to your future because the present material things are taking more priority then you're really lying to yourself that you're budgeting correctly. Anyone who earns any amount of income can split it evenly to have for the retirement, future issues (car, layoff's etc) and to spend presently. And if you say but it's not enough for what I want now then re-asses your skills. The more skills you have the more you can earn. Get a second job if you really want to spend more on things you want but don't cheat yourself out of your future self. PPO vs HMO really is that with PPO you can go to any doctor or specialist outside of your insurance network hence the higher price. HMO you are restricted to only see doctor and specialist that are in the network of your insurance network. You CAN still see outside of network doctors even if you are HMO but it will still cost you extra as oppose what it would be if you stuck within network. Also, note if you have any emergency surgeries that's the exemption you have to see any doctor any hospital because it's an emergency surgery needed.
